Crabtree Creek Restoration

Riparian plantings on Crabtree Creek

The South Santiam Watershed Council is working on restoring and enhancing habitat conditions in lower Crabtree Creek.  Actions taken as of 2011 include invasive weed control, planting over four acres of native trees and shrubs, and the installation of engineered log jams that serve as habitat for Chinook salmon and winter steelhead.

Habitat logs placed in Crabtree Creek

Crabtree Creek is an important tributary to the South Santiam River as it is offers many miles of habitat for salmon, steelhead, trout, and other fish like pacific lamprey.  Western pond turtles have also been spotted in the creek.  The South Santiam Watershed Council is engaging landowners in voluntary restoration at sites in the lower subbasin.  In addition, Crabtree Creek is the focus of the SSWC’s Japanese Knotweed Control Program.
