Watershed Restoration Team

The South Santiam Watershed Restoration Team (WRT) is made up of students from the Sweet Home Senior High School in Sweet Home, Oregon. The WRT will serve as a conduit for youth to engage in civic and watershed enhancing endeavors as they learn about watersheds, watershed councils, and the opportunities they have to make a difference in their communities through councils. The STEWARDS program is responsible for providing the WRT with oversight and support.

Each year, the WRT will be charged with developing a comprehensive project within the watershed. Students will write and submit a proposal to the South Santiam Watershed Council, including a budget, project narrative,  and timeline. Students will then implement the project from start to finish. Projects will be complete by the end of each school year.

Already we’ve had a successful start to the WRT, and students are excited to implement a project to help watershed health.  As one of our students put it, “If salmon can’t get to their final destination, it breaks up the salmon life cycle.”

Are you interested in being a member of the WRT or supporting local, student-led habitat restoration efforts? Please contact Krista Lopez, STEWARDS Coordinator at kristalopez@fs.fed.us.
